Thrive Thru the Menopause

The menopause can be a struggle for many women – but it doesn’t have to be. As a post-menopausal woman and the author of  The Mindful Menopause I have personally experienced, coached and interviewed 100’s of women about the menopause and how mindfulness can and has helped them to go through this time of their life with greater ease.

The menopause today comes at a time when many women are juggling multiple demands. These can include family life, often with teenage kids that can create a heady hormonal mix at home and jobs with limited policies in place to support menopausal women. Additionally, women may find they have the added responsibility of caring for elderly parents. Throw into the mix a society obsessed with youth and looking young. It’s not surprising menopausal women feel exhausted, anxious and overwhelmed.

Women can have different combinations of physical symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue and joint pain, headaches, tender breasts, weight gain, or dry skin. Moreover, the psychological symptoms are often overlooked and even misunderstood. Common issues include anxiety, low mood, forgetfulness, which can be extremely debilitating.

The great news is that now Mindfulness has been scientifically proven to reduce anxiety, irritability, tiredness, and insomnia that accompanies the menopause. A recent study with 1774 women conducted by the Mayo Clinic showed “mindfulness may be a promising tool to help women reduce menopausal symptoms and overall stress”.

Mindfulness also helps women overcome many of the negative thoughts, lack of confidence and low self-compassion, that can arise at this time. Mindfulness gives women a way to transition through the menopause with greater ease and grace. By having a daily mindfulness habit woman can feel the difference mentally, physically and emotionally.
